Brief Bio:
A. David Paltiel, M.B.A. Ph,D, is Professor in the HPA division in YSPH. He is also appointed at the School of Management. Trained in the field of operations research, Dr. Paltiel develops mathematical simulation models of chronic diseases and uses those models to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses on a variety of medical technologies and public health activities. In a series of recent studies, he established the economic evidence base in support of expanded HIV testing in the United States. He played a leading role in drafting the CDC's 2006 Revised Recommendations for HIV Screening. In the last five years, Dr. Paltiel's service at the national and international levels has included: membership on three expert committees for the Institute of Medicine; permanent membership on two NIH study sections; Co-Editor of Value in Health; Editorial Board of Medical Decision Making; and election as Secretary-Treasurer for the Society for Medical Decision Making. As a model-based decision analyst, Dr. Paltiel occupies a unique intellectual niche at Yale. His expertise in both the theory of choice under uncertainty and its practical adaptation to policy-relevant applications provides substantial opportunity for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees interested in promoting a more reasoned approach to clinical practice and priority setting in health and medicine.
