   CIRA peer review provides an opportunity to enhance the quality of grant proposals and manuscripts written by CIRA scientists by sharing them with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues. The spirit of CIRA peer review is one of collegiality and respect; peer review is constructive rather than evaluative. Investigators use the feedback they receive as they see fit. We encourage you to have your proposal reviewed early in its development. If you would like to submit a grant proposal or manuscript for peer review, please contact Jon Atherton (jon.atherton@yale.edu; 764-4351).

   Speaker: Geoffrey P Garnett, Ph.D., Professor of Microparasite Epidemiology, Division of Epidemiology, Public Health and Primary Care, Imperial College, London. Dr. Garnett is an applicant for the senior HIV faculty position at the Yale School of Public Health.

2. NEW! Training Program: Treatment of TB, STDs, HIV, Hepatitis C and Substance Abuse at the Border: Managing the Binational Patient
   Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center is partnering with the Pacific AIDS Training and Education Centers, the Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center, and the California STD/HIV Prevention Training Center to present this course on managing the bi-national patient. Speakers include clinicians and social service providers from both sides of the US-Mexico border. After the training, participants will be able to discuss the latest trends and treatments for TB, STDs, HIV, Hepatitis C, and substance abuse; and review the relationship - and examine the impact and needs - of these epidemics locally.

3. New APA Mentorship Program For Researchers Interested in HIV/AIDS and Communities of Color
   The American Psychological Association (APA) Office on AIDS seeks qualified mentors and mentees to participate in a two-year, distance-learning, mentorship program designed to prepare doctoral-level behavioral and social scientists for careers as independent researchers in the area of HIV/AIDS and communities of color. This new program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) utilizes state-of-the-art, distance-learning technologies (e.g., webcasts, online classrooms, etc.) to assist mentees achieve three major goals:1) develop and implement a career development plan focused on building the capacity to conduct independent research in the area of HIV/AIDS and communities of color; 2) conceptualize, draft, and submit a high-quality research application to an appropriate NIH funding mechanism; and, 3) establish a mutually supportive network of professional colleagues with common research interests.
