CIRA is fortunate to have Dr. Jean Schensul leading the Qualitative Methods and Ethnography work group of our Interdisciplinary Research Methods Core. Through a series of tailored trainings, CIRA is placing more emphasis on building qualitative research methods capabilities. Dates and topics for these trainings will be announced in future eBulletins.

ICR's Founding Director to Receive Prestigious Award
One of CIRA's collaborative institutions, The Institute for Community Research (ICR), is pleased to announce that Jean J. Schensul, Ph.D., ICR's Founding Director and Sr. Research Scientist, is the recipient of the 2010 Bronislaw Malinowski Award from The Society for Applied Anthropology. The Award will be presented formally to Dr. Schensul at the 70th Annual Meeting of the Society in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico in March of 2010. At that time Dr. Schensul will deliver the Annual Malinowski Lecture, which will be published in Human Organization, the Society's primary publication.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Evaluation Fellowship Program

During the one-year fellowship, non-profit professionals will be trained in evaluation methodology while working on a real-world evaluation project for their employer. The program's goal is to help nonprofit professionals become better internal evaluators of their programs and better consumers of information for decision-making. The program also aims to equip participants with evaluation skills that will help enhance the evaluation capacity of their organizations. Ultimately the program seeks to infuse the evaluation field with well-trained individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to meet the increasing diversity of programs and communities that the profession serves.

Unique Exhibit Uses Traditional Arts to Educate Audiences about AIDS

Title: Siyazama: Traditional Arts, Education, and AIDS in South Africa
This is an extraordinary exhibit featuring beadwork, story quilts, dolls and other folk arts created by those suffering with AIDS as a way to educate others about prevention and treatment.
Exhibit available through June 26, 2009: The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, during special weekend events, and by appointment. This will be the only showing of Siyazama in New England.

CFAR SBSRN 4th National Scientific Meeting

Date/Time: 10/01/09-10/02/09
The Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Network (SBSRN) is intended to link the 20 Centers for AIDS Research (CFARs) and fellow behavioral scientists/researchers in the field funded by the NIH in the United States. The SBSRN is intended to 1) initiate mechanisms to encourage sharing resources; 2) to host an annual scientific meeting; 3) to provide a forum for a national mentoring program for junior and translational investigators, and 4) to promote collaborative multi-site research. This meeting is open to CFAR investigators and affiliates as well as all interested academic, public health and community members.
