    CIRA peer review provides an opportunity to enhance the quality of grant proposals and manuscripts written by CIRA scientists by sharing them with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues. The spirit of CIRA peer review is one of collegiality and respect; peer review is constructive rather than evaluative. Investigators use the feedback they receive as they see fit. We encourage you to have your proposal reviewed early in its development.     This Notice provides the Transition Schedule for NIH/AHRQ/CDC/NIOSH/FDA from PureEdge to Adobe-based grant application forms for electronic submissions of SF424 Research and Related (R&R) applications. Please note the importance of this schedule, as Grants.gov will not accept PureEdge applications after the transition dates listed in the Notice.

  2. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Now Accepting Proposals for Grand Challenges Explorations Round 2

    The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on 3 September 2008 that it is now accepting grant proposals for Round 2 of Grand Challenges Explorations, a five-year US$100 million initiative to encourage bold and unconventional research on new global health solutions. Proposals for six topics will be accepted online at www.gcgh.org/explorations through November 2, 2008.

    One of the primary objectives of Grand Challenges Explorations is to involve scientists around the world who do not typically work in global health. This includes those with innovative ideas in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the developing world; people working in the private sector; and young investigators.The initiative uses an accelerated grantmaking process. Applications are two pages, and preliminary data about the proposed research are not required. In addition, the online application process has been streamlined for Round 2.

  3. NIMH Policy Update for Career Awards (K-Series) (NOT-MH-08-017)

    This Notice revises and updates the most recent NIMH Policy Update for Career Awards (K-Series) that was published in the NIH Guide on April 21, 2005 (NOT-MH-05-008). This Notice is intended to complement the policies of the trans-NIH K-series program announcements and addresses NIMH-specific issues regarding the following program announcements:

    PA-07-297: NIH Pathway to Independence (PI) Award (K99/R00)
    PA-06-001: Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01)
    PA-06-527: Independent Scientist Award (K02)
    PA-06-512: Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08)
    PA-05-143: Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23)
    PA-08-151: Mid-Career Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24)
    PA-06-087: Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25)
    PAR-05-109: NIMH Career Transition Award (K22) - This FOA expired on March 2, 2006. Non-competing applications will continue to be supported.

    Applicants are expected to pursue research and career development activities relevant to the mission of the NIMH (http://www.nimh.nih.gov). Therefore, prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the appropriate research training program officer at the NIMH (see http://www.nimh.nih.gov/research-funding/training/contacts-for-research-training-and-career-development-programs.shtml) prior to preparing an application for a mentored career development award.   4. CODE New England: "Community Organizations in Diverse Environments Working to Improve HIV Prevention

    Date: 09/30/08 – 10/02/08
    Manos Unidas of The Latino Commission on AIDS, in cooperation with local agencies will be holding an HIV/AIDS Training Institute for the states in New England. For three days, service providers in the area of HIV prevention and education in the States of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire will have the opportunity to learn and discuss about useful topics that can help improve the quality of services. The design of the institute will be tailored to address the needs identified during focus groups conducted in Rhode Island on March 26, 2008.
