HIV and AIDS in Connecticut

Epidemiological Trends in HIV and AIDS in Connecticut *

  1. There have been 14,917 cases of AIDS reported in Connecticut since 1981. Of these, 7,607 (51.0%) have died and 7,310 (49.0%) are living.
  2. As of 2006, 9,871 people are reported living with HIV or AIDS.
    • 7,310 people are living with AIDS in Connecticut (210 per 100,000 population).
    • Of these, 67.6% are male, 32.4% female, 35.3% white, 32.7% black, 31.0% Hispanic, 3.6% are < 30 years of age, 59.2% are 30-49, 37.3% are ≥50 years of age, 20.0% MSM, 45.8% IDU, and 22.6% heterosexual and 8.2% in other or unknown categories.
    • Approximately half (48.2%) live in the cities of Hartford (n=1,514), New Haven (n=1,153) and Bridgeport (n=855).
    • During 2002-2006, 3,247 HIV cases were reported to DPH. Of these, 686 (21.1%) were subsequently reported with AIDS and 61 (1.9%) died prior to being reported as an AIDS case. Of the 2,561 people living with HIV, 34.0% are white, 27.2% black, and 36.5% Hispanic.
  3. In 2006, 543 AIDS cases were reported with 63.9% male, 36.1% female; 28.4% white, 25.8% black, 41.4% Hispanic; 16.9% MSM, 33.3% IDU, 18.0% heterosexual, and 29.5% with other or unknown risk (see Technical Notes for discussion of risk groups).
