India
India has a population of over a billion and it is estimated that 5.1 million individuals are infected with HIV. It has the second largest number of HIV infections in the world following South Africa and accounts for nearly 10 percent of the global HIV/AIDS prevalence. In the absence of implementation of strong and wide-ranging prevention programs, it is estimated that by 2010 India will have over 20 million HIV/AIDS cases. Despite the rise in the number of new cases, the national prevalence of HIV is below 1 percent. Six states have been identified as high prevalence states: namely, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur and Nagaland. More about India
