Request for Letters of Intent: Community Research Partnership Program
This page is also available in: Microsoft Word (.doc) and Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) seeks proposals for the seventh annual Community Research Partnership Program (CRPP) grant competition in HIV prevention research. This program aims to support the conduct of research by Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in collaboration with CIRA scientists. The intent of this collaborative approach is to build the research capacity of CBOs and to expand the pool of AIDS researchers doing community-based research.
Proposed projects should be consistent with CIRA's mission to conduct research on the prevention of HIV infection and on the reduction of the negative consequences of HIV disease in vulnerable and underserved populations. We welcome proposals that contribute to the development of CIRA's multilevel HIV intervention research initiative, focusing on Connecticut's three urban centers: Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport. The ultimate goal is to have a significant impact on the epidemic by reducing new HIV infections and improving the care and outcomes of those infected. Multilevel research entails interdisciplinary, multifaceted and linked investigations of individuals, households, neighborhoods, community social networks, society, institutions, or health and other systems. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: opt-out testing in hospitals, community health centers, correctional settings, or alternative community sites; novel approaches to identifying undiagnosed HIV infections; linkage of newly-diagnosed cases to care; prevention among positives; social network approaches to prevention; acute HIV infection; and methodologies to measure outcomes and demonstrate impact of a multilevel intervention project.
CIRA plans to fund up to two projects this year, with a maximum award for individual projects of $25,000. Funding will be provided for up to one year. The application--excluding budget pages--will not exceed seven pages. All proposals must have Co-Principal Investigators (e.g. a CIRA scientist collaborator and a community research partner). We will help applicants identify an appropriate CIRA scientist collaborator and/or community partner if you are unable to do so.
Letter of Intent:
Applicants must submit a short Letter of Intent. This letter should include a descriptive title of the proposed idea, a one paragraph description of your idea, and the name and contact information of either the CIRA scientist collaborator and/or community partner who will work on the project. It might be helpful to express your idea in the form of a research question (e.g., What is the impact of the expansion of this program? What are the HIV prevention needs of young Bosnians?). If you have questions, please contact Leif Mitchell, Assistant Director, Community Research Core, before submitting your Letter of Intent, at (203) 764-4347 or via e-mail at leif.mitchell@yale.edu for consultation on your ideas. Please send the Letter of Intent to Leif Mitchell by mail (CIRA, Attn: Leif Mitchell, 135 College St., Suite 200, New Haven, CT 06510) or by e-mail (leif.mitchell@yale.edu). Letters of Intent should be postmarked or sent by e-mail no later than November 13, 2009.
Application Process
Applicants that submit a Letter of Intent will be invited to a meeting at which we will explain the CRPP and the application process more fully. Our invitation for you to submit a full application will be contingent upon:
- the project's alignment with CIRA's mission,
- the availability of a CIRA scientist collaborator and/or community research partner,
- the feasibility of the project, and
- the potential for the project to lead to a larger research study funded by the National Institutes of Health or other granting agency.
Full applications will be due on March 1, 2010.
Eligibility:
The program is open to all Community Based Organizations in Connecticut and CIRA scientists. Women and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
