Assistant Director for Ethics, Policy and Research Development
Generic Title: Research Associate II, Level 23
This is a full-time position with dual responsibility for coordinating the development of a large scale multi-level HIV intervention research project for CIRA in collaboration with other NIMH funded HIV Prevention Research Centers, and for supporting the activities of the Law, Policy and Ethics (LPE) Core. The Assistant Director will report directly to the Executive Director of CIRA.
Multilevel Research Project Development Duties
- Coordinate a planning process engaging a multidisciplinary team of scientists and partner organizations in the development and execution of an innovative, multi-level HIV intervention research trial in Connecticut.
- Support the conceptualization and development of the multilevel research design.
- Convene and serve as liaison between related working groups, facilitate the development and implementation of project work plans and timelines.
- Identify potential funding sources and contribute to the content development of grant proposals to support planning and implementation of the project.
- Conduct literature reviews and prepare summations of relevant studies and evidence based interventions to inform the development and design of the research trial.
- Attend project planning meetings in Connecticut and elsewhere including meetings of the national network of HIV Prevention Research Centers participating in the multi-level interventions trials.
- Establish and maintain relationships with research and other collaborators; set up agreements identifying respective roles and expectations.
- Coordinate with all CIRA Cores to promote Center-wide input in the project.
- Prepare written communications such as progress reports, reports to funding agencies, memoranda of agreement, and meeting summaries.
Law, Policy and Ethics Core Duties
- Oversee the day to day operations of the LPE Core and represent the Core at CIRA and other meetings.
- Conduct literature searches on research and current developments in the areas of law, policy, and ethics relating to HIV/AIDS.
- Respond to requests from CIRA affiliated scientists for Policy Updates relating to law, policy and ethics issues, as well as initiating updates in these topic areas and monitor the progress and publication of these Updates.
- Address or triage law, policy and ethics related requests for Core services from scientists, including requests for support in exploring human subjects’ issues and preparing IRB applications.
- Participate in Peer Review process to identify potential law, policy and ethical issues in CIRA affiliated grant proposals and manuscript drafts.
- Monitor the policy environment in order to identify emerging legal, policy and ethics issues that may be relevant to CIRA research by monitoring on-line policy resources and attending relevant policy events.
- Provide staff support to LPE Core sponsored mini-conferences and workshops on both domestic and international topics.
- Monitor and evaluate the activities of the LPE Core and prepare annual reports on Core activities.
General Duties
- Participate in CIRA Research Support Team meetings, staff meetings and essential administrative and strategic planning events to coordinate efforts, cultivate linkages across Cores, and support the overall CIRA mission
- Supervise the work of research assistants and students
- Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate.
Education and Experience
Masters degree in Public Health, Sociology or related discipline and two years professional work experience.
- Two years of research experience, including participation in research study design, human subject protections and data collection processes.
- Experience with development of grant proposals and reports preparation.
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS field including law, policy and ethical issues.
- Knowledge of Yale HIC, IRBs, and/or human subjects issues in general.
- Supervisory experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work well with others as a team member at various levels of organizational responsibility for different projects.
- Strong research, organizational management, interpersonal, writing and communication skills.
- Ability to set priorities among multiple tasks and work independently. Attention to detail, consistency and reliability.
- Able to think creatively and solve problems effectively.
- Supervisory and training skills.
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and internet search engines.

Research Associate 3 HSS - International/Community Research Director
Yale School of Medicine - Internal Medicine/AIDS
Under guidance from the Principal Investigator, provide research oversight, technical assistance and
manage epidemiological, clinical research and demonstration projects between infectious diseases
and substance abuse. Research is focused on domestic and international
community-based clinical trials and adherence studies of treatments for HIV, substance abuse, medicationassisted, prison release programs, and on health care systems integration. Technical assistance requires training, site review, project reports and communication with international collaborators on demonstration projects that lend themselves to future research projects. Study subjects are individuals with infectious diseases, substance use disorders, criminal justice involvement, mental illness as well as other comorbid conditions.
As the International/Community Research Director, be responsible for study design issues, research
operations and implementation and participating with our international research initiatives. In this position also be responsible for developmental activities of new research projects and remain involved with oversight of the array of individual research projects. Establish and maintain relationships with federal agencies, funding sources, international and domestic study collaborators, referral agencies, and community-based agency and other constituent groups.
