Law, Policy and Ethics Mini-Conference
Request for Applications 2008-2009

CIRA's Law, Policy, and Ethics (LPE) Core announces the availability of Core support to organize mini-conferences. These are small conferences, typically no more than 20 participants (usually including at least half non-Yale participants), to discuss a focused topic in law, policy, and/or ethics. Generally, they will last one day, involve the preparation and circulation of background materials prior to the conference, and lead to some concrete outcome(s). Examples of such outcomes may include: new research collaborations, model legislation, policy recommendations, and publications. In addition, it is expected that mini-conferences will result in at least one Core publication (e.g. a policy update, advisory memo, or analytical study). Examples of topics of mini-conferences held in the past include innovations in drug treatment, policing and public health, intellectual property rights, and ethical issues raised by conducting clinical trials in prisons.

Available Funding

The LPE Core has funds available for up to 2 mini-conferences per year, at a maximum of $4.000 each, and will provide the following types of assistance in organizing the conference:
  • Assistance identifying potential conference participants, conference format, background materials, etc.
  • Administrative support (including assistance with travel and hotel arrangements; identification and securing of space, AV equipment, refreshments, and other services for the conference; correspondence with conference participants; copying of conference materials; and conference set up).
  • Assistance with production of conference materials (for example programs, participant lists, etc.) and conference publicity.
  • Full or partial coverage of conference costs, such as travel, honoraria, copying, phone, postage, etc.
  • Assistance with development, production, and distribution of post-conference analyses and related materials.
Please note that some Mini-conferences may require additional funding from other sources to cover program costs. CIRA encourages applicants to apply for funding from additional sources to augment this mini-conference grant.

Eligibility

CIRA Affiliated Scientists, Post-doctoral Fellows, members of any CIRA core, and Community Advisory Board Members (in collaboration with CIRA scientists or fellows) are eligible to submit proposals. In general, it is expected that, at minimum, the individual proposing the conference will work with a designated Core member to identify a list of participants and discuss overall conference format and plans for implementation.

Application Dates & Submission Guidelines

The LPE Core will accept proposals for 2008-2009 mini-conferences beginning on October 1, 2008. The Core will consider these proposals on a rolling basis at its regular monthly meetings. To allow for sufficient time for review and planning, applicants should submit their applications at least three (3) months prior to the proposed date of the mini-conference. Decisions as to whether to support a proposed mini-conference will be based on a number of factors, including: timeliness of the topic, compatibility with the Core’s goals and interests, and significance of conference outcomes.

To submit a proposal for a mini-conference:

  1. Discuss mini-conference idea with the LPE Core Research Associate and/or an LPE Core member. For names and contact information, please call Amy Smoyer, LPE Core Research Associate, at (203) 764-8454, or go to: http://cira.med.yale.edu/about_us/law_policy_ethics_core.html.
  2. Complete the Mini-Conference Application Form.
