CIRA's NIMH Interdisciplinary HIV Prevention Training Program is currently accepting Post-Doctoral Fellowship applications for 2010-2011.
About the CIRA Fellowship
A primary objective of CIRA is to train the next generation of HIV/AIDS scientists. In order to accomplish this goal, CIRA established the NIMH HIV Prevention Interdisciplinary Training Program in 1999. This program currently trains both Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellows.
Through these Fellowships, new scientists are equipped with the skills to advance prevention research and to address future challenges of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other emerging diseases. This Training Program prepares Fellows to think critically, and to address issues common between HIV and other diseases, such as barriers to and facilitators of behavioral change and understanding the public health response required to stem an epidemic.
This HIV Prevention Training Program is unique in providing:
- An interdisciplinary approach
- A focus on vulnerable and underserved populations
- A strong methodological foundation
- Opportunities to conduct ethically-sound, community based research, domestically and internationally
- Emphasis on legal, policy, and ethical analysis of HIV prevention science
- Opportunities to work on both descriptive and intervention studies, studying individuals, families, social networks, communities, and society at large
Fellows are trained within CIRA, working closely with a research preceptor from among CIRA's 18 Primary Training Faculty members. Fellows will be encouraged to write articles for publications and prepare an extramural grant application in an HIV-related area.
Training Program activities include:
- Research preceptorship and collaboration in ongoing research
- Training in research methods and ethics
- Optional coursework
- CIRA and HIV-related seminars and colloquia
- Special events
- Participation in all aspects of CIRA
We seek to increase the number of women and minority scientists in the field of HIV prevention research.
