Peer Review
The Development Core's extensive peer review program helps to ensure the quality of CIRA science and the success of CIRA affiliated grant applications

The Center's peer review program is designed to enhance the quality of grant proposals and manuscripts written by CIRA scientists by sharing them with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues. The spirit of our program is one of collegiality and respect; it is constructive rather than evaluative in nature. For new research and training projects that PIs anticipate affiliating with CIRA, peer review is one of the few pre-submission requirements that should be met. However, Investigators are free to use the feedback they receive as they see fit. We encourage peer review at an early stage of a project's development; even a 2-3 page concept paper is appropriate for peer review. Regular peer review dates are set at the start of each semester, with at least two sessions scheduled per month, and ad hoc sessions convened as necessary (for convenience, we often review manuscripts via e-mail).

Sessions take place at CIRA's offices at 135 College Street, New Haven, and last around 1.5 hours, with two proposals typically reviewed per session. Each review is led by a primary reviewer, whose role is to provide oral and written feedback on each proposal.

These short meetings are invaluable beyond the traditional benefits of formal peer review. Reviewees continue to benefit from practical advice on their grant proposals and manuscripts. But the sessions also offer a rare opportunity for a cross-section of the entire CIRA community - drawn from CIRA scientists, staff, community representatives and Post-Doctoral Fellows - to keep abreast of and discuss the very latest research, and, of particular value, to forge additional, cross-discipline collaborations around otherwise unrealized research projects.

In accordance with CIRA's affiliation guidelines, all research and training grant applications that are to be affiliated with CIRA must have gone through peer review. The affiliation requirements for consultations with the CHSR, IRM, LPE, and CR (for community-based research) Cores and the requirement for community input, can all be met through peer review.
