Bibliography on Community Mobilization and Empowerment (June 2008) - PDF, 252 KB
The purpose of this literature search was to identify published research related to community mobilization and empowerment, HIV/AIDS, and sex workers. Our focus was on resource poor counties. The original abstracts for selected articles were organized into the following categories:
  1. descriptions of interventions;
  2. evaluations of interventions;
  3. theoretical/conceptual models;
  4. participatory research;
  5. community or social movements; and
  6. miscellaneous.
Results of a Cross-sectional Survey of Female Sex Workers in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh (May 2007) - PDF, 166 KB
This report summarizes findings from a cross-sectional survey of 812 female sex workers (FSWs) recruited from the greater Rajahmundry area in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, India between April 1st and June 29th, 2006. The findings provide a snapshot of the diversity of sex work in the Rajahmundry area and the multiple vulnerabilities faced by FSWs. In addition to demographics we collected information related to condom use practices, health knowledge and behaviors, police interactions, the sex work community, and interactions with CARE-SAKSHAM (C-S), the local Avahan-funded program. Several features of the FSW population in the East Godavari District (EGD) have implications for prevention planning and programming. The purpose of this literature search was to explore the available literature on presumptive treatment and syndromic management for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), both for sex workers and other populations. This desk review begins with an overview of the Rapid Policy Assessment and Response (RPAR) methodology, which analyzes the way in which law and enforcement practices impact the risk of disease among marginalized populations. A modified version of RPAR, or RPA, has been adapted for the analysis of HIV risk among sex workers in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. The main section of this report provides a detailed log of both national and state-level laws that relate to sex work in India, compiled by the Lawyers Collective HIV/AIDS Unit. The purpose of this literature review and annotated bibliography is to develop an understanding of microfinance and how it has been used, implemented and evaluated in developing countries. The initial goal was to also explore the relationship between sex work and microcredit, but few articles were found that fit this criterion. The literature review contains the following five sections:
  1. types of microfinance and basic concepts;
  2. sex work and microfinance;
  3. microfinance, HIV/AIDS, and stigma;
  4. microfinance in India; and
  5. methods of microfinance impact assessment.
The annotated bibliography contains the following 9 sections:
  1. microfinance overview;
  2. microfinance institutions;
  3. microfinance design, implementation and performance;
  4. microfinance monitoring and evaluation;
  5. microfinance and India;
  6. microfinance for women;
  7. microfinance and health;
  8. microfinance, poverty reduction and the poor;
  9. microfinance, group processes and social capital.
Policing Interventions in Developing Countries: An Annotated Bibliography and Review of Grey Literature (March 2006) - PDF, 178 KB
The purpose of this annotated bibliography and review of the grey literature is to explore a range of interventions designed to involve and impact police practices, particularly in developing countries. The initial goal was to identify interventions that focus specifically on the relationship between police and sex workers, but few articles were found. The literature search was expanded to include police interventions related to HIV, and police interventions regarding drug use in developing countries. The annotated bibliography also includes articles pulled from the grey literature on police interventions regarding sex work, but the subsequent literature review looks more extensively at such reports in the grey literature on policing interventions and sex work. This literature review summarizes the available peer-reviewed and grey literature on trafficking in South Asia, including a brief description of the history of trafficking in the area, definitions of trafficking, laws and law enforcement, reasons for trafficking, and trafficking routes, as well as a discussion of how trafficking and HIV/AIDS relate and various trafficking-related interventions.
