A NOTE FROM OUR STAFF

 |
Leif Mitchell, Assistant Director Community Research Core |
This month’s CIRA Notes features Ed Leduc, a friend and tireless HIV/AIDS advocate and educator. Mr. Leduc is one of 14 members of CIRA’s Community Advisory Board who provides community perspectives on all of the Center’s activities to CIRA’s leadership.
CIRA believes that community-based collaboration is necessary for the successful conduct of HIV prevention research. For HIV prevention and intervention research to be relevant and of benefit to the communities in which it is conducted, it must be undertaken with the support of and in collaboration with community-based organizations working with at-risk populations. Such collaborations also enhance the quality of the science being conducted, helping to ensure, for example, effective recruitment of study participants, inclusion of survey questions that are meaningful to participants, and development of relevant interventions. CIRA’s Community Research Core therefore works to support effective and meaningful community-university collaborations to enhance HIV prevention research.
These collaborations also facilitate the timely dissemination of research findings to those most affected by them. CIRA’s annual AIDS Science Day is an example of this approach. This year’s AIDS Science Day will take place on April 22 at the Omni New Haven Hotel. Here CIRA affiliated scientists will present their findings to scientific and community members alike setting the stage for community-university collaborations to emerge.
I hope you can join us for this learning experience and that you enjoy this month’s newsletter.
Peace,
Leif Mitchell |

 IN MEMORIAM
 Anthony Givens (1955 - 2005)

Many of you have already learned of the death of one of our employees, Anthony Givens. Anthony was a Research Assistant in the EMD and a valued employee, working for Dr. Robert Heimer for 5 years. He was a dedicated and talented team member, considered one of Dr. Heimer's best interviewers. Tony's gentle manner and quiet wisdom made many of those he worked with feel comforted and cared for. He will be greatly missed by many.
