Research and Analytic Tools
The Interdisciplinary Research Methods (IRM) Core facilitates development of new HIV/AIDS research by providing technical support in advanced statistics. Interdisciplinary studies are a growing aspect of CIRA's work. In 2001, only 24% of affiliated research combined teams from different disciplines. Currently 56% of CIRA affiliated research consists of such teams. While such collaborations provide fresh insights into the complex issues presented by the AIDS epidemic, combining different research approaches in a statistically robust manner poses a challenge. Qualitative, ethnographic and biological methods all use different metrics. The IRM Core has responded by going beyond traditional frequentist statistics, offering affiliated researchers technical support and training in advanced methods such as Structural Equation Modeling, Spatial Statistics, Generalized Estimating Equations and Bayesian statistics. IRM Core input reaches CIRA affiliate researchers through individual training sessions, structured within-house peer review meetings and researcher initiated consultations.
